In the year 2022, I decided to visit my grandfather’s gravesite at the Veterans Cemetery in Riverside, CA. I was just a child at my last visit to him, so I needed to phone my mother to gather the precise location. During our call she expressed how deeply saddened she was that her move to Nevada had distanced her from my grandfather. She kindly asked that I clean around his grave, headstone, and leave a flower arrangement on her behalf. I, of course, happily followed her instructions. That same year, while working at the delivery shop, we received an order request to a father’s gravesite. This was just a few days before Father’s Day – one of our busiest times of the year. Now, we don’t typically accept these orders, but as fate would have it, the order went unnoticed and we proceeded with the request. It was a beautiful arrangement boasting colorful flowers including a beautiful message from the wife and his children. Just like my grandfather, he was a World War II veteran, so this was already becoming a special delivery for me.
I knew this would take some time to locate and deliver but with the help of the cemetery coordinator I was able to find the site and deliver the arrangement and soon be on my way. However, upon arriving at the grave, something pulled at my heartstrings – I said a quiet prayer and carefully placed the flowers down. While it was not part of my job, I found myself removing the leaves that blanketed the site and brushed away all the natural debris that hadn’t been cleaned up in what seemed like some time. When finished, I sat in my truck to have lunch. I took a quick look around and noticed so many gravesites that were overwhelmed with weeds, tall uncut grass, foliage, mud, and even trash. In that moment, a vision unfolded.
I returned the following weekend and began cleaning around the sites; trimming around the headstones, picking up the trash left behind by surrounding visitors, and even wiped away dust and dirt. I couldn’t help but feel pure joy and excitement; not only for myself, but for the families that would one day return to their loved one’s gravesite and see that they truly were laying to rest in a peaceful, beautiful location. I was suddenly overcome with happiness and instantly knew that my true passion had found me – I had to continue moving forward. There are so many that are unable to maintain their families’ resting places. Our hearts and delicate memories are devoted to our loved ones, and while we live for them, when they are no longer with us, we cannot forget the legacies they leave behind. This is what Los Angeles Grave Care is dedicated to, “The care of our loved one’s final resting place, that we find just as sacred as you do”.
